Guide

How to use SEO compare for competitor research

A website comparison should cover more than Domain Rating. On-page SEO (title, meta description, single H1, canonical, Open Graph) decides whether a page can earn rankings once it has links - DR only estimates link equity.

Use SEO compare before you copy a competitor’s playbook: if they lead on DR but fail basic title/meta/H1 checks, you can out-execute them with cleaner on-page SEO while you catch up on backlinks.

When picking directories or partners, prefer sites that win both relevance and DR. A topical site with solid on-page SEO and moderate DR often beats a high-DR site that is unrelated or nofollow-only.

The on-page score is a readiness checklist (not a Google ranking prediction). Domain Rating comes from Ahrefs’ free public API - always credit results as Domain Rating by Ahrefs.

Questions

SEO Compare FAQ

What is SEO compare / website comparison?

A side-by-side check of multiple websites: on-page SEO signals (title, meta, H1, OG, canonical), technical basics (HTTPS, viewport, robots.txt sitemap), live Ahrefs Domain Rating, and a simple readiness score - so you can see who wins and where to fix gaps.

Is the on-page SEO score a Google ranking score?

No. It is a readiness checklist (0–100) based on common on-page and technical signals. Google rankings also depend on relevance, content quality, links, and intent match.

What metrics does this website comparison include?

On-page SEO score, Ahrefs Domain Rating, HTTPS, HTTP status, response time, title tag, meta description, H1, canonical, Open Graph title/image, Twitter card, viewport, HTML lang, robots meta, sitemap in robots.txt, approximate word count, and internal/external link counts.

How is Domain Rating different from the SEO score?

Domain Rating estimates backlink strength (Ahrefs). The SEO score estimates on-page readiness. A site can lead on DR and still lose on titles/meta/H1 - or the reverse. Check both. For a single DR lookup use the Ahrefs DR checker. For one URL's on-page checklist use the website SEO checker.

Can I compare more than three websites?

This tool caps at three per run to protect fetch and Ahrefs rate limits. Run another comparison for additional domains.

Where does Domain Rating data come from?

Ahrefs' free public Domain Rating API. Always attribute results as Domain Rating by Ahrefs. On-page HTML is fetched live from each homepage.
